The importance of magnesium

Magnesium is a crucial mineral for the horse's muscle and nerve function. Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic activities in the body and contributes to: 

• The electrolyte balance
• Normal functioning nervous system 
• Normal heart function
• Normal psychological functioning
• Normal protein synthesis
• Energy turnover

Lack of magnesium

Magnesium is one of the minerals that disappears through the horse's sweat. Not all feed states contain enough magnesium to replace the losses that occur. 

Magnesium deficiency can manifest itself through nervousness and muscle tremors. A feed state that is low in magnesium can lead to increased blood pressure and reduced elasticity in the blood vessels. Which means that magnesium deficiency can be harmful to the vascular system and increase the risk of ruptures. 

When is magnesium recommended?

All horses need magnesium. Extra magnesium should be given if there is a proven deficiency in the forage and to horses that train and compete.

• In case of lack of magnesium in the feed state.
• For horses with tense muscles.
• In case of increased losses via sweat or diarrhoea.

Dosage

2 ml per 100 kg body weight per day, or based on calculated feed status. Ex. Horse, 500 kg, 10 ml/day (10 g).
