Moist dermatitis in dogs
Moist dermatitis, also known as hot spots, is a common problem for dogs during the summer.
What causes it?
Moist eczema thrives in a warm and humid climate, which is why the risk of it developing is higher during the summer months.
How do I detect moist dermatitis?
Often, the dog will scratch or lick a specific area excessively. Common areas where acute moist dermatitis occurs are the cheeks, back, thighs, and tail base. It starts as a small, pink, hairless spot but quickly develops into exudative lesions (pus-filled sores) that may appear unpleasant. It can also be very painful for the dog.
What can I do?
If the moist eczema is detected early, you can treat it at home:
-
Shave the fur around the moist dermatitis
-
Wash with saline solution
-
Wash with Chlorhexidine Shampoo to clean, or alternatively, spray generously with Chlorhexidine Spray
-
Use a cone on your dog to minimize licking the area
If your dog is in severe pain from its moist dermatitis, you should always consult a veterinarian
Can I prevent moist dermatitis?
By examining your dog's skin and coat carefully every day, you increase the chance of detecting moist dermatitis early. The earlier it is detected, the greater the chance that home treatment will be effective.
