Weigh a horse
"How can I determine my horse’s weight without using a scale?"
The most accurate way to determine a horse’s weight is by using a scale. However, if a scale is not available, there are alternative methods to estimate the weight.
¨
1. Using a weight tape
A simple way to estimate your horse’s weight is by using a weight tape, which is available at equestrian stores. These tapes provide a relatively accurate weight estimation.
2. Measuring and calculating weight
You can also estimate your horse’s weight by measuring its girth and body length and then applying the following formula:
Girth (A) × Girth (A) × Length (B) = WEIGHT

Girth (A):
Measure around the horse’s chest, just behind the withers and elbows.
Length (B):
Measure from the elbow to the point of the hip.
Important considerations:
-
Ensure the horse is standing evenly to obtain the most accurate measurement.
-
This method is primarily designed for warmblood-type horses. Draft horses tend to weigh more than the calculation suggests, making the formula less precise for them.
