Pregnant Dog
"What should I consider when my dog is pregnant?"
A pregnant dog needs the right conditions to stay healthy and give her puppies the best possible start in life. She should be in optimal body condition before mating, as being underweight can affect nutrient supply and being overweight may impact fertility.
During the first few weeks, the dog's energy needs remain relatively unchanged, but they increase significantly in the second half of pregnancy, when the fetuses grow the most. During lactation, energy demands are at their highest—up to three times the normal level. A high-energy diet, such as puppy food, should be introduced well in advance.
A prebiotic supplement, that supports a stable gut flora can be beneficial throughout pregnancy and lactation. The digestive system undergoes significant strain, and a well-functioning gut flora helps the mother absorb all essential nutrients.
B-vitamins
are crucial for metabolism, energy conversion, and red blood cell formation. Folic acid (B9) plays a particularly important role during pregnancy, as it supports puppy development and reduces the risk of defects. We recommend supplementing with B vitamins to ensure adequate intake.
Throughout pregnancy and lactation, it is essential that the bitch has free access to fresh water, as her hydration needs increase significantly.
By providing proper nutrition and careful monitoring, you can give your dog the best conditions for a smooth pregnancy and a successful whelping.
