FAQ - Dog
Feeding
"How much food should my dog eat?"
The amount of food your dog needs depends on several factors, including its size, weight (overweight or underweight), daily energy expenditure, and the energy content of the food. Commercial dog food often includes guidelines and recommendations specific to that product.
To calculate your dog's daily energy requirement, you can use one of the following formulas:
For adult inactive dogs / dogs with low to normal activity levels:
Metabolizable Energyn= 95 x (dog's weight in kg) 0,75
Example 1:
A 22 kg dog that goes on four walks a day but is mostly indoors:
95 x (22) 0,75 = 965 kcal per day
For adult active dogs:
Metabolizable energy = 130 x (hundens vikt i kg) 0,75
Example 2:
An adult hunting dog during peak season:
130 x (22) 0,75 = 1320 kcal per day
If your dog food contains 1450 kJ/100g you first need to convert this to kcal:
1 kcal = 4,1868 kJ
1450/4,1868 = 346 kJ/100 g
If we take the dog from example 1 it will need to eat (965/346) x 100 g = 280 g per day (of this specific food)
If we compare with the dog from example 2 it will need to eat (1320/346) x 100 g = 382 g per day (of this specific food).
